Nov 21 Inaugural Girls Academy finishing on a high
The first ever Arklow Town Football Club Girls Academy is drawing to a close after a fabulous ten week programme that has seen each and every participating girl thoroughly enjoying the Academy. The aim of the Academy is to encourage more girls into the club, to play and enjoy the beautiful game. And then, hopefully, to introduce and promote the ever increasing number of female footballers into WDSL competitions.
Under the guidance of Brendan Kenny the response from girls and parents alike has been nothing short of brilliant. To see young girls taking their first steps in football with increasing confidence and enjoyment has been highly satisfying for Brendan and the team assisting him with the Academy. Concentrating on the basics of the game the girls have proven to be very quick learners applying themselves well to the drills and tasks put before them. Brendan has taken responsibilty for the youngest age group with Cormac O'Toole overseeing the mid-age group of girls. Noel Brauders has taken responsibility for the development of the older girls within the Academy.
The ability within the Academy has been evident from the early weeks and their collective improvement each week has resulted in each player growing in confidence, which will stand the girls in good stead when they commence playing WDSL football. Each session to date has ended with a quick high tempo game to end with all the age groups mixed together.
All in all, each girl has learnt the basics in football but perhaps more importantly they have all fully adhered to the Girls Academy motto, which is to "have fun".
Well done to all the girls who have participated in the first ten week programme, which ends this coming week, and we hope to see the Girls Academy go from strength to strength when it resumes in the New Year.
